Exploring Creeks and Hamlets Along the River Fal

It’s almost been two weeks since the lockdown restrictions were slightly eased. I’m writing this on the 21st May 2020 and we are now allowed to spend unlimited time outside. My Dad turned 60 yesterday, so we decided to go for a family trip to our new favourite spot along the Fal River for a picnic and a swim.

My friend Luke introduced me to this hidden gem along the river and I’m still in shock by how close it is. For the sake of the locals, I'm going to keep the exact location of this spot quiet, but if you’re up for an adventure then I suggest you make your way in the direction of Trelissick Gardens.

The River Fal is a perfect location if you want to spend time in (or on!) the water. The water is generally completely flat, and the scenery makes for a perfect spot for relaxation. The first time we went to this location, Luke took his drone so we could capture the unspoiled estuary in all its glory.

For my Dad’s birthday, we spent the day at the Quay, where we enjoyed jumping off of the side into the water (if you do this, make sure to check the tide times), and watching the wildlife, kayakers and passing pleasure boats. Make sure to take your wetsuits as the water is still super chilly!

If you want to get away from the beach crowds then I definitely recommend walking along the River Fal and spending the day on one of the creeks. As you head to the Quay, you’ll pass earthy embankments, woodland, and an old fort, which is thought to have been there since the Iron age. From my research this particular Quay was used to ship copper and tin ore from Chacewater and North Downs mines.

Considering the current situation, we had a wonderful day along the River for my Dad’s birthday. The creeks and hamlets around the River Fal really are something special.

Have you ever explored the creeks and hamlets along the River Fal?
