Polurrian on the Lizard: The Refurb With a Twist

Perched proudly on the cliffside at Mullion in the Lizard, The Polurrian Hotel offers spectacular views over the Atlantic ocean and a reassuringly unspoilt location for guests. Contemporary in style with enhanced lifestyle in design. The Polurrian has recently opened its doors to the public after a refurbishment with a twist. If you’re looking for a hotel in Cornwall by the sea, then look not further.

The Polurrian on the Lizard is a 41 bedroom hotel which recently undertook a refurbishment throughout its communal areas. We were kindly invited to the hotel to check out why the hotel has caused so much conversation here in Cornwall. Luckily for me, the Lizard is just a 45 minute drive from my home however despite this, my lack of knowledge about the area is pretty poor - I’d only been to the area a handful of times so my boyfriend Josh and I were really looking forward to exploring somewhere new.

With an unspoilt location, the hotel delivers what’s got to be one of the best views around

One of the things that stood out for me were the incredible views across the ocean. From our bedroom window we could see right across the cove, making it the perfect place to watch the sunset with a glass of wine before dinner. Opening the curtains in the morning and hearing the sounds of the sea will always be one of my favourite things to wake up to. Here’s to hoping my future house will have coastal views (please)!

Spoilt with a BRAND new Mediterranean menu

Again, with superb views out onto the ocean, the hotel restaurant which is also open to non-hotel guests features a wood fired oven producing hand-stretched pizzas alongside a delicious new menu which is inspired by the rustic dishes and bold flavours of the Mediterranean. The restaurant uses the finest local produce from Cornwall’s farms to sea.

Mussels are one of my favourite foods so it was a no brainer when I saw them on the menu. Josh opted for the fish of the day (bass) which was served with vegetables and a portion of fries. I have to say, I was very impressed with the food that we had during our stay and I definitely hope to visit the restaurant again soon.

Breakfast is served as a ‘help yourself’ to pastries, fruit and cereal. Alongside that you can also pick a cooked dish - I of course chose the smoked salmon on sourdough toast and Josh had the full english. Delicious!

Laid back vibes, chill out areas with a retro twist

I can confirm that the chill out and bar areas are SUPER cool! As you walk into the area you are welcomed with a decadent bar which offers a great selection of rums, gins, beers and wines from Cornwall as well as a new cocktail list. With stylish features and contemporary interiors, the hotel sparks uniqueness with a quirky twist. In the corner of the chill out area you will find retro seating and a customised waltzer - personally I love this feature and it really gives the hotel a shining personality.

On Sunday’s the hotel hosts Wood-fired Sessions which includes live music from some of Cornwall’s biggest music names. Find the event list here.

Josh and I decided to chill out at the bar area after dinner with some cocktails - the staff were wonderful and even made us bespoke cocktails to our flavour preferences.

Activities for the whole family

The Polurrian has it all. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or a jam-packed adventure as a family, there’s something for everyone. The hotel has a health club which is home to a gym, pool and sauna. If you’re looking for something which gets you moving then there’s also a ping pong table room, cliff top tennis courts, outside pool and a play area for the little ones. Of course, lets not forget the coastal paths and beaches that can be found on the hotel’s doorstep. An adventurers dream!

The hotel also has a partnership with Lizard Adventures which offers kayaking, coasteering, paddle boarding, surfing and beach survival skills.

Did someone say “the best presented afternoon tea in the UK”?

Yes, you heard correctly! During my stay at the Polurrian I had the opportunity to announce that the hotel had been nominated as one of the best presented afternoon tea places by the Hotel F&B magazine (in my Instagram highlights).

We tried and tested the afternoon tea for ourselves and honestly, it was amazing! No wonder that a week later it was announced that they had in fact WON the award!

Presented on a large board, we indulged on hand made delicacies and carefully crafted sandwiches. Josh and I were amazed at how the treats tasted - how can a round ball of red velvet chocolate taste SO good! Well done Polurrian, well deserved!

If that wasn’t enough, then the Polurrian is just a short drive away from some of Cornwall’s most loved beaches

kynance cove

Just when you think that The Polurrian on the Lizard has it all…. the hotel has a number of small coves on its doorstep but is also just a short drive away from Kynance Cove, one of Cornwall’s most loved beaches. The National Trust beach is an outstanding area of beauty and there’s no wonder why.

Josh and I chased the sun and spent the afternoon exploring Kynance Cove. We climbed over rocks and wondered through caves - a truly magical place.
