Restaurant Review: Kernow Dine & Deli in Falmouth
Nestled on Killgrew Street in Falmouth, Kernow Dine & Deli unfurls its dual identity: a bustling deli by day, offering high-quality artisan produce, seamlessly transforming into an elegant fine-dining restaurant by night, helmed by the talented young chef, Gabriel Verdi.
Across six years, navigating the culinary scenes of Cornwall and London, Verdi's path illustrates his unwavering commitment and passion for the culinary arts, shaped by the mentorship of renowned culinary figures. It’s truly remarkable to grasp that at just 19 years old, Verdi not only leads his own kitchen but does so with such remarkable skill and finesse.
Verdi's monthly changing selection of small plates showcases his culinary skill, blending Cornish ingredients with the flavours of Italian and French cuisine. To kick off our dining experience, we enjoyed a warm focaccia and incredible crab cones decorated with delicate dill pearls. I loved these crab cones and could have easily eaten a whole plate full of them! Additionally, we perused the extensive wine menu and selected a glass to compliment our meal, noting that the same selection is offered at their wine bar next door.
We each selected two small plates and decided to share a side, striking the perfect amount of food for our appetites. Our choices included the lobster ravioli bathed in a rich lobster bisque infused with black garlic, a dish that truly dazzled with flavours. We also went for the scallop cerviche accompanied by shiitake dashi, a personal favourite for its beautiful presentation and blend of clean and vibrant tastes.
Next, we requested the short rib, along with Chef Verdi's personal favourite: the lamb featuring romesco and black olives. Additionally, we couldn't resist indulging in the potato pave enhanced with bold accents of black garlic and Parmesan – each dish bursting with robust flavours.
For dessert, we indulged in the Mont Blanc, and caramel dessert, as well as the salted caramel and chocolate tart with creme fraiche sorbet. Both sweet treats were gorgeous!
Both my cheffy partner Scott, and I were really impressed with Kernow Dine & Deli, and Chef Verdi’s approach. Kernow Dine & Deli is open from Tuesday - Saturday 10.30am - 2.30pm for brunch and lunch, or 5pm - 10.30pm for dinner. Thank you to Kernow Dine & Deli for having us, and I look forward to supporting Chef Verdi's continued success in his career!
